SWISS AND ITALIAN DISTRICTS FROM THE HILL.
My house is the third in the first row on the right. These districts were built after the earthquake and
were intended to be the new Spitak, but the old Spitak was rebuilt, leaving the new suburbs isolated

MOUNT ARARAT FROM THE HIGH COUNTRY NORTH OF YEREVAN.
Mount Ararat dominates the skyline of Yerevan--that is, when not obscured by clouds or smog--
and of course the Ararat Valley south of the city, and the long drives coming down from the east
or the high country to the north. Though it is several miles inside Turkey, it is the symbol of the
Armenian Nation (as opposed to the Armenian Republic), much to the disgust of the Turks.

These houses are rented, and the top rent is about $26. Renters must sign
an affidavit that they cannot afford any other housing. The houses are four
small rooms and a bath. Some people have added a room on the front.
In some cases it is the chassis of an old bus.
